Star Wars Assault Team Gameplay Basics

Welcome to the first installment of Stuff For Guys, where you'll find information about a lot of useless stuff, an occasional useful stuff, but it's all stuff for guys.  Today's post will be about the hot new game for your mobile phone and tablet from the folks at LucasArts called "Star Wars: Assault Team".

The Basics
A few words about the basics -- this is a card-themed game where you battle the game's artificial intelligence (A.I.) engine by taking turns to attack each other or power yourselves up.  You can grow in strength by leveling up and promoting your character cards, or heroes.  The three modes of play are the campaign missions, the Special Missions, and the Arena battle.  If you're reading this post, then you probably already played the game and won't need step-by-step instructions on how to access the Arena or the Training pages.  If you need those, just post a comment.

Overall Strategy
This game is all about leveling up and promoting your heroes so that you can finish the campaign missions, get better items in the Special Missions, or beat random online players in the Arena.  There are 5 tiers, each with their own set of levels:
  • Tier 1 (White): Level 1 to 5
  • Tier 2 (Yellow): Level 1 to 10
  • Tier 3 (Green): Level 1 to 15
  • Tier 4 (Red): Level 1 to 25
  • Tier 5 (Blue): Level 1 to 35
The higher the level within a tier, or the higher the tier, the stronger you are.  To get to the next tier, you have to reach the maximum level of the current tier.  So, to get to Tier 3, you have to reach Level 10 on Tier 2.

In order to level up, you have to collect Training Items and then incorporate them into your character.  There are 5 tiers of Training Items whose color also correspond to the hero tiers, and they have different amounts of experience points (XP):
  • Tier 1 (White): 20 XP
  • Tier 2 (Yellow): 40 XP
  • Tier 3 (Green): 60 XP
  • Tier 4 (Red): 100 XP
  • Tier 5 (Blue): 160 XP
Once you have one or more of those Training Items, then you can start leveling up your heroes.

Advanced Strategy for Levels
If you want to power up your heroes quickly and efficiently, then don't just stick them with any Training Item -- pay attention to the AFFINITY and the COMBO that you're using.  Those will help you level up way faster.

Let's use Wookiee Berserker as an example.  His affinities are Survival and Weapon.  If you use a Training Item from a different affinity, you get the normal XP Gain, but no XP Bonus, like the screenshot below.

If you use a Training Item from one of his affinities, then you will get both the normal XP Gain and an XP Bonus, like this:

You've just doubled the amount of XP that your hero will get.  If you fill up all 5 training slots, then it may look something like this:

So pay attention to the affinity of the training item that you use.  Equally important is the combination of the Training Items used -- combinations of 3 or more Training Items with the same affinity will actually multiple your XP Gain much more than your XP Bonus.

Here's an example of a combo using any 3 of the same affinity Training items:

The best combination discovered so far is to have a "straight flush" of Training items -- one of each tier from the same affinity.  Here's what it looks like using Chewbacca:

That's basically what C-3PO is advising in this message:

Here are some other examples of cool straight flush Training items:

In future posts, strategies for promotions and missions will be covered.  In the meantime, enjoy the game and thanks for reading!
