Star Wars Assault Team: Training Combinations - UPDATED

Welcome to Stuff For Guys, where you'll find information about a lot of useless stuff, an occasional useful stuff, but it's all stuff for guys.  In this earlier post, I talked about some of the basic strategies of training, or leveling up your characters, in Star Wars Assault Team.  Specifically, the strategy discussed was to use all 5 of the same affinity Training Items whenever possible.  I referred to this as a "straight flush", and it would like something like this:

This would yield a total of 2,660 XP (experience points).  That's a tremendous amount, considering the values of the individual pieces:
  • Tier 1 (White): 20 XP (x2 for a matching affinity)
  • Tier 2 (Yellow): 40 XP (x2 for a matching affinity)
  • Tier 3 (Green): 60 XP (x2 for a matching affinity)
  • Tier 4 (Red): 100 XP (x2 for a matching affinity)
  • Tier 5 (Blue): 160 XP (x2 for a matching affinity)

The straight flush method gives you much more than any other combination using the same affinity (e.g. all Armor).  However, there are 2 combinations that provide an even higher yield:

The first combination, using Sakiyan above, combines 5 Tier 5 Training Items of different affinities (let's call this 5 of a Kind).  Total XP is 3,360!  However, only 1 of those Training Items corresponds to Sakiyan's affinities.  What would happen if we used 2 of the same affinities?

Using 2 of the same affinities for 5 of a Kind would give you a total of 3,920 XP!  That's the most that I've ever seen.

If you use Tier 5 Training Items that only correspond to the character's affinities, that should be much more.  That is not the case though, probably because the game designers thought it would be too easy to focus on Tier 5 for a single day.  As seen from the screenshot below, using 5 Tier 5 Training Items of the same affinity, even when a character has that affinity, gives you zero added benefit other than the standard bonus:

Let's recap the top 3 combinations seen so far:
  • Straight Flush (using same affinity): 2,660 XP
  • 5 of a Kind (1 affinity with character; others all different): 3,360 XP
  • 5 of a Kind (2 affinities with character; others all different): 3,920 XP
Now, 5 of a Kind might combine to give the most XP, but it's not the most efficient way to train your character.  In most cases, getting a Straight Flush requires just 14 Energy (8 for Tier 5 Training, 6 for Tier 4 Training).  At most, an additional 4 Energy mission may be required to get the sometimes-rare Tier 1 Training Item.  Compare that to 40 Energies for 5 8-Energy Tier 5 Training missions; you would end up spending nearly 3 times the amount of Energy to get an additional 50% increase in XP. Put another way, using 40 Energies on Straight Flush would get you nearly 7,900 XP as opposed to 3,920 XP.  Additionally, you wouldn't have to wait 5 days to get all of the Training Items.

UPDATE July 2, 2014:
With the new special training items, your combinations can now go a lot higher!

Also, with all missions now costing only 4 Energy, a straight flush only requires 8 Energy (4 for Tier 5 Training, 4 for Tier 4 Training) or 12 Energy (throw in a Tier 1 Training on the days that the game withholds those Tier 1 items).  You can also use Tier 2 training items of different affinities to create good combinations:

Regular Tier 2 x 2: 160 total XP

4 Different Tier 2: 600 total XP

5 Different Tier 2: 980 total XP

Same for Tier 4 Training Items:

Have you found any other interesting combinations?  Let us know in the comments!  Enjoy the game and thanks for reading.

  1. I posted some of this on the GameFAQs message board a while back. I think the thing we don't really know is how the bonus works for some of the weird non-crate items. That would be interesting to learn.

  2. Whoops, forgot the link: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/778857-star-wars-assault-team/69025130

  3. I have found out that Epic Rescue Chewbacca is the most effective -yet boring- way to get all heroes leveled up from Tier 1 to Tier 3 (lvl15). This mission costs only 1 energy and will grant you with 5xp 30credits and 3 Tier 1 or Tier 2 items or heroes. Most of the time, you would get two training packs and a hero, or three training packs.

Now, a 5-of-a-kind Tier 2 combination gives you enough xp to get your characters from Tier 2 Level 1 to Tier 2 Level 10. And you would need two 5-of-a-kind Tier 1 combination for the same result.

Another interesting way to level up your heroes is by using other heroes. Actually, by using heroes with similar affinities, you can get as much as 225xp for a Tier 2 Level 1 hero (for 2 identical affinities ; 150xp for 1 identical affinity and 75xp for no same affinity). 5 slots of these and you can get 1125xp.

By using 5 Tier 3 Level 1 characters with 2 identical affinities, you can 3750xp at once...
