Star Wars Assault Team: Version 1.3 Upgrade is BAD

Welcome to Stuff For Guys, where you'll find information about a lot of useless stuff, an occasional useful stuff, but it's all stuff for guys.  LucasArts has just released version 1.3 of Star Wars Assault Team, and to put it very nicely, it pretty much sucks butt.  This, coupled with some other bad decisions in the past (like this one, and this one), has earned LucasArts the new name LucasFarts, which is what I will call them from now on.  Here are the changes that were either packaged in this release or coincided with it:

1. New Arena Leagues

Don't get fooled by the fancy name.  This is really a way to limit how far you can go in Arena battles.   In the old versions, as long as your team was strong enough to do so, you can last all the way into the 5th battle.  Now, there's a cap, and you have to earn this new thing called Trophies (which is what Bounties were originally called) in order to advance to the next tier of leagues.  To make matters worse, it appears as if your league standings will expire, and you'll have to start all over again.  What was the reason for introducing this change now?  Because LucasFarts doesn't want you to have as much fun.

2. Gems Cost Increase

It now costs more gems to promote a character if you don't have its promotion items.  A lot more.  Anywhere between 12 and 20 gems more depending on what Tier you're trying to promote them to.  It's one thing to have this high cost from the start, but why introduce such a big change so late?  Because LucasFarts wants to make the game harder for everyone, including the beginners.

BOTTOM LINE

I've emailed LucasFarts about this in the past.  I think I'm OK with them constantly tweaking the game to see how people will react to it.  I wasn't happy that they kept changing the recharge time per Energy.  I wasn't happy that they took away the additional damage boost for special attacks.  And I definitely wasn't happy when Han Solo's special attack decreased because his overall damage went down, but I continued to play on.  However, this latest set of changes are not tweaks, these are big changes that will degrade the user experience.  With so many games out there, this will cause some users to stop playing.  And perhaps that's the goal for LucasFarts -- weed out the experienced players and make room for the beginners.  I'm not sure how this strategy can actually work to LucasFarts' benefit though.  The goal of an app is to have as many users as possible.  So bottom line -- it's time to start looking elsewhere for that next cool app.

  1. I'm not a fan of the arena changes either. Yes it was boring before, but it was playable. They seem to think (and maybe our behavior statistically suggests this) frustrated players are the best kind.

Those who applaud it have higher energy maxes (newer players) and more desire to play a restrictive format.

I don't have any interest in pvp, and this new set up is just a more complex masking of the fact that it is impossible for what ever reason.

The upside of all this is Windows players are finally getting new missions and reduced mission costs.

I really hope I'm wrong and this arena set up produces actual rewards (not a "chance" at) for those who need or earn it. But more likely it is just another fixed reward system for those who enjoy being teased/manipulated.

    1. not really if you have a t5 roster of strategically placed cards you most likely always win. And i never lose bounties cause i win ALL my revenge battles. Plus on the upside they reset my MASSIVE win counter which i hate.

    2. best of luck with all that. sounds terribly repetitive

  2. the arena actually changed for the better. Now they reset my massive win counter and i'm powning some noobs and getting 100 bounties a round. Plus after you play a long time you get extra bounties from league bonus. But i already have 13 t5 characters so i don't care about the other things. Now i'm just hunting for ig88 and 4 lom, and it really sucks that the only bounty hunter i have is boba fett, who's ability sucks in the arena. Plus i win all my revenge battles so i never lose trophies. (you can win them back).

  3. I also think they "fix" or "cook" player numbers via the helper system. This way double the number of teams are playing the missions. Why else would they need to use an actual person's hero and not a generic one?

When it first happened, I wondered why all the information was present, what do I care where the helper came from.

I don't get the arena changes yet, as they seem to be segregating players by activity level. I think the trophies thing is to "poke" players like myself who don't care about losing a few bounties. Now being attacked has a minor consequence.

  5. They also screwed up bronze crates so you can't get wookies, jawas, rodians, katarns, massifs, and other great characters that were updated to promote to t5. I bought at least 50 bronze crates hoping to get a jawa, katarn, or rodian, but there were none.

    1. What??!!! That's so messed up. Those cheap bronze crates were the best! So who did you get in those bronze crates then? Medics, Womp Rats and Tuskens?

    2. The katarns are still available. I just got another one yesterday. However, the others listed are no longer available. The only heroes that can be obtained from the bronze crates are: rats, ITOs, medics, advosec, gamorreans, and rebel troopers (I think that is all of them). Tuskens are not even available.

    3. Tuskens are actually premium characters that are more rare than the spider, cause I have 3 spiders but only one tusken. They also made it harder to get a bounty hunter in silver crates, because i bought 40 silver crates and received no bounty hunters :C.

    4. Well, tuskens start at T2, so they shouldn't be in bronze crates in the first place. I wouldn't consider them rare. In the last week I've found about 5 of them (in silver arena crates). I have 4 spiders too. I do agree that bounty hunters have become more rare. I already had 4-LOM and Dengar from the old arena, and the only bounty hunter I've found thus far in the new arena is another Dengar. I was hoping at least to get another Terentatek, Gotal, Duros, Ithorian, or Rodian, but I got none. Only rats, rats, and rats. (I hope they change to go to T5; I already have 4 T4 L25.)

  7. I don't really mind leagues. I only have 6 T5 L35 characters, so I can't put together the ideal team, so I actually think it's good that I'm restricted to 3 battles. I get a lot of 3 battle runs, so I'm actually doing very well. I don't mind being attacked; I can win them back fairly easily. What I don't like is that I lose trophies if I lose a challenge. Come on. The energy waste is enough of a punishment.

    1. Update: Today I received my first Zuckuss in a silver crate, a gold training in a silver crate, and my first IG-88 when I got promoted to Platinum 1. Don't hate arena nearly so badly anymore.

  8. I was randomly awarded 30 trophies for a win when attacked. I haven't played arena 24hrs +. I was getting notifications of losses, but no bounties or trophies were lost.

These "trophies" are just a mind game to get you to care about something that has reduced value.

Restriction is only good when self-imposed. Why couldn't the number of matches be expanded for the higher leagues (of extraordinary gentlemen) to 6 or 7?

Oh yeah that 25-29 credit bonus in missions is great. Really hope I don't lose that. Guess I should spend 4 gems and protect my trophies.

    1. you shouldn't cause once you leveled to a new league its permanent. I still am platinum league even after i lost 200 trophies due to my inactivity.

  9. I wonder who would win in a arena fight if 4-LOM was your last character and you killed him with his concussion shot but you also killed the other team's last character. Please try this in the arena to see if you win or not.

  10. One guy on appinvasion said that his enemy used 4-LOM suicide, and the game got all messed up. Sadly, the guy didn't get any bounties from it. Of course, we don't know what happened to his enemy.

  11. how do i get a massiaf or rodian? i thought of a coll arena plan of 2 rodians, a doc, and a massiaf. also, i thoughi of a plan where i put in all tier 1 guys to drop down to low levles so you can preserve your bounties, like farming in clash of clans. also, can you get a bounty hunter from the reealy cheap areana crates?

    1. All 5 of my bounty hunters have come from silver 450 crates. I also got a Rodian that way a few days ago. If this is what you mean by really cheap arena crates, then yes.

The confusing thing about this discussion is that arena and gem crates share the same name. Bronze arena crates haven't had heroes for 3 months maybe?

So if someone talks about heroes from bronze crates, they are likely referring to the 500 credit ones in the gem crates screen and not the 50 bounty arena crates. I was surprised to get an uneccessary bowcaster in a 50 arena crate recently.

    2. The new arena system penalizes you for losses,so I wouldn't try that T1 or T2 stuff right now. I did it with the old system, but after a few easier fights it would give you T5s regardless.

The best way to get easier opponents is use lower Hp close to base humanoid, no beasts, no han and do not use specials. Again, this is not as viable under the new system.

The closest thing we have worked out to a strategy is to credit shield repeatedly when you enemies get unbeatable or only 1 battle can be won.

Just remember to renew the shield or get back into battling before the hour is up.

As for preserving/earning trophies that is still unclear

  12. they also made bounty hunters unusually rare in silver crates, since i bought 50 silver crates and there were no bounty hunters but in 2 gold crates i got 1 bounty hunter, dengar. I hate the new arena crates cause its hard to save up for gold crates when you are trying to promote other chracters ex. probot, anzat, gotal, savrip, tusken, c3po to t5.
